Miscellaneous Info:

The Casspir is not named after an animal as many South African vehicles are.  The name ‘Casspir’ is actually derived from a combination of group names that were involved with the creation and development:  CSIR = Council of Scientific & Industrial Research and SAP = South African Police.

Mark 1, 2 (on a Mercedes-Benz truck chassis) and 3 (on TATA chassis) versions were produced in many other variants including Ambulance, Artillery Fire Control, Freighter (Blesbok), Mine Clearance Vehicle, Mine Sensor (MVMMDS), Mobile Minefield Breaching Vehicle (Pofadder), Recovery Vehicle (Gemsbok), Tanker (Duiker) and Weapons Carriers; mounting 81mm Mortars or 106mm Recoilless Rifles.

Although the Casspir 3 was initially replaced by the Sable APC, the end of the Casspir was only temporary.  In approximately 2010, a company specializing in refurbishing Casspir Mark 2’s, Mechem Vehicles, re-started production of the Mark 2, introduced the Casspir “S” (shortened version of the Mark 2), air-portable Casspir "LP" (Low Profile) and created the new Mark 4. To make an already confusing subject more so, in 2011 BAE Land Systems released a seemingly unrelated vehicle named the Casspir Mark 6 which was mounted on a URAL 4320 6x6 truck (which also has a 4x4 version available).  Thankfully, BAE later changed the vehicle’s name to the RG Protector.
