The M-ATV was designed as a more capable temporary replacement (until the availability of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle) to US Military's fleet of up-armored HMMWV's, which were quickly aging and also found to be lacking in performance in hostile environments such as Afghanistan and Iraq. The vehicles were also envisioned to be a highly protected, but more a maneuverable alternative to the larger, more cumbersome MRAP fleet in use. The M-ATV uses the proven and very capable chassis and TAK-4 suspension, which has been used in the USMC's Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) truck series.
The first version of the M-ATV's in US Military service were subsequently designated M1240. Due to the IED threat encountered in Afghanistan, later vehicles were fittted with the Underbody Improvement Kit package (C-Kit Armor) and designated M1240A1. Other armor packages subsequently fitted to the M-ATV series include EFP Add-on Kits to defeat explosively formed penetrators and RPG Protection Kits (Q-Net Armor) to protect the vehicles against rocket propelled grenades.
Other M-ATV variants in service with the US Military include the M1245 SOCOM Special Forces Vehicle and M-ATV Tactical Ambulance, both put into service in 2010. In addition, Oshkosh Defense has also produced other variants of the M-ATV and hopes they will find a place in the US Military arsenal. The vehicles are the 2.5 Ton Cargo Carrier and Multi-Mission Vehicle (MMV). The MMV is available in (4) four configurations: Command & Control, Reconnaissance, TOW ITAS and Troop Carrier.
