Miscellaneous Info: | The BTR-87 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was developed as a private venture by Russian firm Military Industrial Company, LLC. (VPK: Voyenno-Promishlennaya Kompaniya). BTR is the acronym for "Bronetransporter", translated from Russian as 'armored transporter'. VPK's aim was to improve the design of the proven BTR-82A Infantry Fighting Vehicle Series by making cost-effective changes. Many of thi BTR-87's features and specifications are the same as the BTR-82 Series. However, significant improvements were made to the vehicle covering the three (3) main aspects of Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) design: Firepower, Mobility and Protection. Specific changes include improved armor, a more powerful engine and the BTR-97's ability to mount a large number of different turrets and remote weapon systems. The most noticeable change to this new design is the engine being relocated from the rear to the right-front. This change provides more protection to the driver as well as allowing passengers to exit more safely from the rear of the vehicle. Despite what looks to be a much-improved APC, no sales seem to have occurred. |
