Miscellaneous Info: | The BTR-90 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was intended to supplement/replace the BTR-80 APC Series, but it never did. BTR is the acronym for "Bronetransporter", translated from Russian as 'armored transporter'. The BTR-90 prototype first appeared in 1994, but was not put into service until approximately 2004. The BTR-90 is basically a larger, improved vehicle when compared to BTR-80. It boasts improved firepower, mobility and protection. The vehicles' turret is the same as the BMP-2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), armed with a 30mm cannon and optional anti-tank guided missile system. Ultimately, the vehicle was only used by Russian Ministry of Interior Forces as the Russian Army declined purchase. Although supposedly only serving until approximately 2011, there are reports it was sighted in 2023 in Ukraine. A couple test variants were also produced, most notably the BTR-90M which had its turret replaced by one similar to the BMP-3 IFV, which is armed with a 100mm Cannon. |
