Soon after Germany started their participation in the
International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operations in
Afghanistan, they realized an urgent need for an armored
recovery vehicle to safely extract damaged Bundeswehr heavy wheeled vehicles.
Thankfully, a few years prior they had already identified a Commercial
Off-the Shelf (COTS) vehicle solution already used by the Canadian
military. That vehicle was the Actros Armored Heavy Support
Vehicle System. Thusly the Bundeswehr was able to quickly acquire and field the Bison Schweres Geshutztes Berge-und Abschleppfahrzeug (sGeBaf). In English that translates to "Heavy Protected Recovery Vehicle". Twelve (12) Bison were quickly built using the Mercedes-Benz Actros 4151 AK 8x8 Heavy Truck as the base. The vehicles are fitted with a fully armored cab designed by South African company LMT Holdings SOC and uses the specialist recovery body and equipment built by Austrian firm EMPL Fahrzeugwerk Gesellschaft m.b.h. |
