The Gorgona* Special Tasks Vehicle was a private
venture by OTO Melara in conjunction with their R3 Capraia Light Armored
Vehicle Series. Those two vehicles shared many of their
components, which would make their procurement more cost effective for
any buyers. The Gorgona was to be produced in two "variants"; the
unarmored Command Vehicle and the protected Combat Vehicle. The
vehicle was tested by the Italian Carabinieri (National Police), but was
not purchased. However, approximately a dozen (12) were reportedly sold
to Oman and/or Saudi Arabia, although we have not seen photographic
evidence of those vehicles. No other sales occurred, although the
vehicle made a temporary comeback in approximately 1994 as a remote
vehicle, named the R 2.5 R (Roboticized) Vehicle. *Gorgona is an Italian Island. |
