Miscellaneous Info: |
The Willys MB/ Ford GPW was the vehicle designed
and built as a direct result of the US Government's search for a
standardized 1/4 ton 4x4 military utility vehicle. A standardized
vehicle would help simplify production by having a single design using
interchangeable parts. The final selection came from the three
"pre-standardized" jeep designs: the
Bantam
BRC-40, Ford GP and
Willys MA. The vehicle design ultimately
selected for standardized production by the US was the Willys MA, which
had a
few minor Ford design features incorporated into it; specifically
their shift lever and hand brake. Although Willys' MA design was selected for production (as the Willys MB), the US Government was concerned the company would not be able produce all the vehicles needed for the war effort. As a result, an agreement was reached where Ford would also produce the Willys design using interchangeable parts, as well as providing much of the machine parts tooling that Willys would have had difficulty producing quickly. The Ford produced Jeeps were known as the GPW. The co-production of the Jeep MB/GPW was an unqualified success as the total built from 1941-1945 was approximately 348,849 by Willys and 277,878 by Ford. The Jeep was used throughout most of World War Two by most all allied nations and soldiered on long after the war ended, many as civilian work vehicles. Not only did the Jeep fulfill its original purpose of being a rugged command/utility/reconnaissance vehicle, but it also served in many specialized roles, most notably as a special forces vehicle. The most well known of these was the LRDG/SAS Jeep. The standardized Jeep was eventually replaced in post-war service by the M38 1/4 ton 4x4 Utility Vehicle (AKA: Willys MC/CJ-3A). Even though the Willys produced MB and the Ford GPW Jeeps were standardized and had interchangeable parts, there are still ways to determine the specific manufacturer of each vehicle. The task can be quite easy when able to view an individual vehicle up close because they were fitted with manufacturing data plates which listed production specfics. Even if the data plates are missing, there are many detail differences between Willys and Ford manufactured vehicles that can help identification, assuming you are viewing a vehicle in person and that you know what to look for. However, the trouble with identifying a vehicle's manufacturer comes when one can only view photographs of a specific vehicle. That task can become quite difficult; even impossible. One simple hint to help identify Willys versus Ford EARLY production vehicles are ist that vehicles of both companies had "Willys" or "Ford" stamped on the rear body panel. Also, early Willys Jeeps were fitted with a "slat grill" rather than the later pressed steel grill used by both companies after early 1942. Lastly, Willys MB Jeeps were fitted with bumpers that had one small hole in the center of the front (to accomodate the crank starter), whereas the Ford GPW also had that hole, plus two others toward the ends of each bumper. These hints are not 100% definitive nor exclusive, but can help differentiated between a Willys MB and Ford GPW Jeep. |
