Miscellaneous Info: The Land Rover Defender Wolf 110 XD/HS Weapons Mount Installation Kit (WMIK) (AKA: Land Rover WMIK) is based upon the Land Rover Defender Wolf 110 inch wheelbase (TUM) High Specification (HS) HS Vehicle Fitted for Radio (FFR). The WMIK add-on package was designed by Ricardo Special Vehicles, Ltd. to allow the Land Rover Wolf 110 to be quickly fitted (and removed) with heavy weapons such as 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun or the MILAN ATGM system. The package was also designed to be used with the Defender 110 vehicle as well, but it reportedly never was, at least operationally. Originally delivered for use by the 16th Air Assault Brigade, the Land Rover WMIK was quickly adopted by other elite units such as the Gurkhas, Paras, RAF Regiment and Royal Marines.  The vehicle became so ubiquitous, that the WMIK was fairly standard equipment in British regular and reserve units as well. Over it's long life span, which still extends to the date of writing this index (2018), the WMIK has had many changes/upgrades to improve performance, protection and reliability.

However, there are four (4) distinct "variants" generally recognized in the WMIK series.  They are, in order of appearance: OWMIK (Original WMIK); EWMIK (Enhanced WMIK); RWMIK (Revised WMIK) and RWMIK+ (Revised WMIK Plus).
In the late 1990's, the first Land Rover variant fitted with the Weapons Mount Installation Kit package, (retroactively referred to as OWMIK) was essentially a "regular" Land Rover Wolf TUM fitted with the WMIK combined roll cage and weapons mount package; along with a few other additions/upgrades. However, after experiencing ambush attacks and the use of improvised-explosive devices (IED) in Afghanistan and Iraq, it was determined that further upgrades to the entire WMIK concept were needed to improve both protection and performance.  In approximately 2005, the EWMIK emerged as the result.  Improvements and changes include under-body mine protection, MAPIK exterior modular ballistic matting, up-rated suspension/chassis/tires-wheels, a full BOWMAN communications system, an Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) suite and the ability to mount a 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher.

Very soon after the EWMIK went into service, the next variant appeared in approximately 2007, coming in the form of the RWMIK.  The RWMIK vehicles were retroactively upgraded OWMIK variants up to mostly EWMIK specifications.  However, the major differences between the EWMIK and RWMIK vehicles were the simplified BOWMAN communications system and the improved underbody armor on the RWMIK.  The improved armor of the RWMIK was built into the vehicle using a composite armor tub, rather than the more simplified add on kits used on the EWMIK.

In 2010, the final variant in the series went into service, that being the RWMIK Plus (RWMIK+).  This version is a MAJOR upgrade of design compared to previous variants, including vehicle dimensions and an increase of seating from three (3) to four (4) crew members.  Once again, upgrades to protection and automotive capability were made.  These changes include a new more powerful engine, strengthened suspension and chassis, new transmission and the addition of exterior composite armor panels, replacing the MAPIK matting previously used.  The RWMIK+ vehicles were constructed either using the chassis of ex-Land Rover (CAV 100) "Snatch" vehicles or converting the last of the remaining EWMIK vehicles.  As the Land Rover Wolf chassis is widely seen as at the limit of its capability, there doesn't appear to be any further upgrades possible to the WMIK family. But, one never knows.
