Miscellaneous Info: The M939 series of 5-ton trucks started production in the late 1980's to replace the older M809 series of vehicles.  The M939 series was produced in many variants including wrecker, dump truck, ect.  Major upgrades to the basic vehicle resulted in the M939A1 and finally the M939A2.

Armored M939 trucks first appeared in the early 1990's during service in Bosnia, but the armor was very simple and and only provided basic crew cab protection. However, after the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004) the need for upgraded armor packages was paramount and were finally produced and fitted to the M939 series of 5-ton trucks.  Finally, taking the armoring of the M939 trucks one step further, some were converted into "gun trucks" by adding armament and armor to the rear cargo bed.  These modern vehicles were reminiscent of the 2 1/2 ton M35 series and 5-ton M54 series of gun trucks of the Vietnam era.
