The M1238 RG-33 Special Operations Command
(SOCOM) 4x4 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle is the only variant
of the RG-33 4x4 MRAP. In
fact, the SOCOM variant was produced in much larger numbers than its
base vehicle predecessor. The vehicle is also classified as a
Category 1 MRAP; that classification being the smallest vehicles (by
weight, size and troop capacity) of the three (3) classes of MRAP
vehicles. As its name implies, the SOCOM variant is designed to be used by American Special Forces and has been outfitted with specialized equipment and upgrades to carry out their unique missions. Unique modifications made to the RG-33 SOCOM variant include increasing crew capacity by two (2), the standard mounting of the Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS II) system, an upgraded engine, the addition of a rear-door assist system, driver's thermal vision enhancements, an upgradeable armor package, the fitting of smoke dischargers and external machine gun swivel mounts and the installation of SOCOM C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance) System. To increase the vehicles' mobility, they were quickly upgraded with the TAK-4 Independent Suspension System and those vehicles are referred to as the M1238A1 SOCOM MRAP. |
