Miscellaneous Info: | This vehicle was based upon the
chassis of the very successful Trattore Leggero TL 37 light artillery
tractor; which is why it is sometimes referred to as the TL 37. In
fact causing even more confusion, some references list it as the AS 37
(abbreviated from "Autocarro Sahariana"), Autocarro Protetto or as just
the Protetto. Originally all Italian armored divisions were slated to receive about 90 S 37 APC's each, but that never occured. Only around 150 were ever built. After the 1943 armistice, the Germans seized a small number and used them as the Gepanzerte Mannschaftstransportwagen S 37 250(i). In fact, a few vehicles even fell into the hands of Croatian forces and partisans as well. An attempt to improve the design was attempted by adding a turret mounting a 20mm Breda Model 35 cannon, but it was not successful. Only one prototype of this vehicle, the TL 37 Autoblindo Africa Settentrionale (North African Armored Car), was built. |
