Miscellaneous Info: | The Saxon was developed to carry troops to the battlefield (a "battle taxi") rather than into battle and was to replace the British Military's Humber "Pig" and Saracen APC's that were being used in that same capacity. The Saxon was built on a monocoque hull and used many components of the Bedford TM 8-Ton Truck. Many variants of the Saxon were built including an Ambulance, Command Vehicle, Internal Security Patrol Vehicle (AKA Saxon Patrol), Mortar Carrier and Recovery Vehicle. The Saxon Patrol Vehicle was originally developed for use in Northern Ireland and probably the most utilized variant, being used as both an APC and Ambulance. The Saxon Patrol was extensively improved by (among other things) giving it a full interior makeover (including new spaced-armor), fitting a more powerful turbo-diesel engine, adding a barricade removal device (bull-bar) and the fitting of mesh covers on the windows. Some vehicles were fitted with other equipment including "Bar Armor" or extendable side-mounted anti-riot shields (called the "Flying Saxon"). |
