Armed with 2-Pounder Cannon

Specifications

Country of Origin/Used by: South Africa
First Produced/Service Dates: 1942
Manufactured by: South African Railway
Crew:
Armament: **Main: 2 Pounder Cannon
Engine: (2) 6 Cylinder Gasoline (Albion Motors, Ltd)
Miscellaneous: Both the 8x4 *South African Heavy Armored Car, Mark 5 and the South African Reconnaissance, Car, Mark VI (Marmon-Herrington) were designed/developed at almost the same time for use in the North African theatre of operations. Like its contemporary, the Mark 5 was also cancelled early in its life because the Allies had changed the tide of battle in North Africa and wouldn't further need many large armored cars.  Only one prototype was built and evaluated where it showed good mobility on every surface EXCEPT soft sand, for which it was to be primarily used.  Thusly, it was abandoned in favor of further development of the more promising Mark 6.

* This vehicle is sometimes referenced to as "South African Reconnaissance, Car, Mark V" or even incorrectly as the "Marmon-Herrington Mark 5".

** The
armament listed above is based upon the only photograph showing any weapons mounted.  However, there is information indicating the armament was planned to be one (1) 6-pounder cannon, a co-axial .30 cal machine gun and a .30 cal anti-aircraft MG mounting.
