Miscellaneous Info: Approximately 500 Type 96 Wheeled Armored Personnel Carriers (WAPC) have been built since 1996. Three (3) variants comprise that number including the Type A (armed with a 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher), Type B (armed with a 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun) and a Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicle. At the time of writing (2021), the Type 96 was to be replaced by the WAPC-Improved (Type 21 WAPC).  However, at present only a few have been delivered to the Japanese Military for testing and evaluation. The Type 21 is a completely new vehicle and not derived from the Type 96 WAPC.
