Miscellaneous Info: The BA-27 is considered to be the first indigenously developed and "mass" produced Soviet armored car. Conflicting sources state either 100 or 215 were built. The first batch of cars produced were built using an upgraded AMO (ZIL) F-15 4x2 truck chassis and fitted with the turret from the T-18 (MS-1) tank. These are referred to as "Model 1927" vehicles.

Subsequent BA-27 cars produced instead used the newer Ford GAZ AA chassis and automotive components. The new chassis was lighter and the engine was slightly more powerful, which gave the "Model 1928" better performance.  One other major change was to redesign the interior which eliminated the need for a fourth crew member.  Although the BA-27 saw service into the early part of World War Two, Soviet authorities knew early-on that an improved vehicle needed to be developed.  As a temporary measure, twenty (20) BA-27's were rebuilt on Timken Ford 3-axle 6x4 truck chassis.  Although these cars did have improved performance, the result was mediocre.

*A few Model 1927 cars were fitted with dual 6.5mm Machine Guns, instead of the single 7.62mm MG.  Although not adopted as a production option, those vehicles stayed in service.
