Miscellaneous Info: |
The amphibious BTR-4 is referred to as an armored personnel carrier (APC), but is
built in a modular fashion so that the rear fighting/troop compartment
can be configured to fit particular weapon systems and/or fulfill
different missions/roles. However, most of the variants seen in
service have more "robust" armaments mounted than traditional APC's, and
are similar to Infantry Fighting Vehicles. Although similar to the
BTR-70 APC and
BTR-80 APC series, it is
not directly derived from either. Variants of the BTR-4 series
are the BREM-4K
Repair and Recovery Vehicle, BRM-4K Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle,
BSEM-4K Ambulance, BTR-4K Command Vehicle, and BTR-4KSh Command/Staff
Vehicle. There have been references made to the MOP-4K Fire Support Vehicle
as being a variant, but we have not been able to confirm its existence. The BTR-4E series also includes a number of improved or specially built vehicles for International customers. The most common is the BTR-4E APC, which is the technically the "export" version of the standard APC, although Ukraine fields a large number of them. That variant has some improvements and upgrades that were to make it more appealing to international purchasers; the most notable is that it is fitted with the Deutz BF6M 1015 CP engine. Otherwise, externally, the BTR-4 and BTR-4E are hard to distinguish. Other examples of these improved vehicles include the uparmored BTR-4E1, BTR-4EN (specific to Nigeria) and BTR-4M, with improved amphibious capabilities as built for the Indonesian Naval Infantry. Finally, two further attempts were made by the manufacturer to substantially improve/upgrade the base vehicle design. These changes resulted in vehicles that are quite different in appearance. They are the BTR-4MV, followed by the further upgraded BTR-4MV1. Both so far have only made it to the prototype stage and no production has yet occurred. *The BTR-4E can mount a myriad of different turrets or remote control weapon systems that are fitted by the manufacturer by choice of the customer. The most commonly mounted is the BM-7 Parus remote controlled turret (specifications above). Some others are the BAU-23x2 turret, which is fitted with two (2) 23mm (2A7M) Cannon and a 7.62mm (PKT) MG; the BM GROM turret, which mounts a 30mm (ZTM-2) Cannon, 7.62mm MG, 30mm (AG-17) AGL and four (4) Konkurs or Baryer ATGM's; and the BM-3M Shturm turret, which is fitted with a 30mm Cannon, 7.62mm MG or 30mm AGL and two (2) ATGM's. |
