Miscellaneous Info:

Although the Champ did not enter into service until the early 1950's, the search for a British-built replacement for the US Jeep started as early as 1945. Directly related predecessor vehicles to the Champ include the Nuffield Mechanizations, Ltd. "Gutty" and "Mudlark" (FV1801).

The name "Champ" was originally only used for the civilian version (WN3) of the vehicle.  However, it was also applied later in the military to this Combat Truck (CT) classified vehicle.  Incidentally, CT references were dropped in 1958 and replaced by the term nomenclature "General Service" (GS).

Two basic body styles of the Champ were produced, the Cargo version (FV1801A) and Utility version (FV1802A).  However, only the Cargo version was produced in a large quantity and in different  specialty variants.  The variants were Fitted for Wireless (FFW)/Fitted for Radio (FFR) (FV1801A/1), Field Ambulance (FV1801A/2), Cable Layer (FV1801A/3) and Machine Gun vehicle (FV1801A/4) .  The machine gun vehicle kit also included body armor as well, but wasn't always fitted.  There is some information available that states that the machine gun vehicles were actually produced in two separate variants depending on the armor/weapon mounted, but it is inconclusive.
