U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) initiated the Ground Mobility Vehicle 1.1 (GMV 1.1) program to find a suitable vehicle to replace their HMMWV based GMV’s. The three finalist vehicles were the AM General GMV 1.1*, Flyer Defense/General Dynamics Ordnance & Tactical Systems Flyer 72 Advanced Light Strike Vehicle and the Navistar Defense Special Operations Tactical Vehicle (SOTV). After a long and sometimes contentious process, the Flyer 72 ALSV was selected as USSOCOM's new GMV 1.1 vehicle.

AM General’s GMV 1.1 was designed around the chassis of their M1165 HMMWV Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV), but includes a width reduction to allow it to be internally transportable in the CH/MH-47 Chinook helicopter.  Although sharing about 70% parts commonality with the currently fielded ECV, the GMV 1.1 has a smaller, more efficient engine, specialized wheels, upgraded suspension and an improved transmission.
