Miscellaneous Info: | In 1938, the
British War Office (BWO) invited a number of companies to design a new
armored scout car, which ultimately became the Daimler Dingo Scout Car
series. Three (3) firms produced prototypes: Alvis Car & Engineering
Company, Birmingham Cycles Ltd. (e.g. B.S.A) and Morris Commercial Cars.
The B.S.A. Scout Car
design was ultimately selected, although the vehicles were produced by
sister-firm Daimler Company Ltd. There were a number of versions of the Dingo produced including the Mark 1, Mark 1a, Mark 1b, Mark 2 and Mark 3. The major visual differences you can easily recognize are that the Mark 1 has a sliding roof over the crew compartment, the Mark 1a & 1b vehicles have a folding roof, the Mark 2 has 2-wheel steering (whereas the previous marks had 4-wheeled steering) and the Mark 3 has an open top. The Dingo and Lynx were fairly close in appearance except that the Canadian Lynx was larger by about 20 inches in length and a ton in in weight. To make matters a bit more confusing, the Italians also produced the Autoblinda Lince during World War Two, which was a copy of the Dingo Mark 1a. |
