Miscellaneous Info: After encountering Allied armored cars, in October 1914 the German Army finally decided to initiate an armored car construction program of their own. Bussing (A5P), Daimler and Ehrhardt were the firms selected and each company submitted one vehicle to the German Army, which were quickly issued to frontline troops. The Ehrhardt offering (Model 1915) was based upon their earlier *E-V/4 Anti-Balloon Cannon truck chassis (BAK- Balloon Abwehr Kannone).

After observing the Ehrhardt's performance in combat conditions, it was obvious the vehicle was too heavy and lacked mobility. So, in 1917 a new design was initiated, with approximately twelve (12) of these Model 1917 cars produced. The main change to these later cars was that they were made lighter than the previous model.  There were also other changes made to improve their performance, including the addition of dual rear wheels and a newly rotating turret.  The most obvious external difference for identification purposes is the fitting of triangular shaped armored boxes around the front headlights. Finally, in 1919 twenty (20) more cars were ordered and produced.  Again, changes were made, although these were not as substantial as the last redesign. The Model 1919 cars now had square armored boxes around the headlights, among other sundry changes.

*The Ehrhardt Armored Cars are often referred to also as the "E-V/4" in many post-war references.  However, we do not believe that name was much used in contemporary times, if at all.

** The initial Model 1915 car had a crew of ten (10). The subsequent Models 1917 and 1919 vehicles are listed as having a crew of six (6).  However, in reality, they were often manned with eight (8).
