During the Polish-Soviet war, the Poles were desperate to augment their
limited supply of armored vehicles. As a result, engineer Tadeusz Tański
designed and built the Ford FT-B* armored car in only
two (2) weeks. The vehicle used the chassis of the ubiquitous Ford Model
T car mated with a hull constructed of captured German armored trench
plates. Depending on the source, either 16 or 17 cars were built.
Despite the improvised nature and delicate appearance of the Ford cars,
its performance and reliability were reportedly very good. In 1921, Mr.
Tański proposed to build an additional 90 cars of an improved design for
use by the cavalry. However, the Polish military did not pursue the
matter because the war was over by that time. * This vehicle is usually referred to as the "FT-B", "Tf-C" or "Model 1920" armored car. However, according to Michal Derela of the PIBWL Military Site, these were never used as official designations. The designer's blueprints referred to it as the "Type B Ford"; which could be extrapolated to "FT-B" (Ford Type B). However, in Polish military records, the vehicles were simply called "Ford Armored Cars". We have decided to use the "FT-B" moniker as it seems to be the one most commonly used. |
