Following the first standardized
armored cars designed by the Admiralty (Rolls-Royce/Talbot/Wolseley First Pattern
Armored Cars) at the beginning
of World War One, a new design of armored car was put forth. Among other
things, the new vehicles were fitted with a new armored hull, a fully
enclosed crew compartment and a rotating turret which mounted a machine
gun. The Lanchester Armored Car was one of those new "Admiralty Turreted"
Pattern* vehicles. The other vehicles fitted with the
Admiralty Turreted Pattern improvements included the
Delaunay-Belleville,
Rolls-Royce
1914 Pattern and Talbot
Armored Cars. The 4x2 Lanchester Armored
Cars were based on the slightly upgraded
"Sporting 40" touring car chassis and design. The Lanchesters were used mostly by the British Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), however a few also saw service with the Army, as well as with Belgian and Russian forces. Although some sources state that the Belgian and Russian vehicles were of a slightly different design than the British machines, others state they were not. However, we do know that many of the Russian vehicles had a few slight modifications made to the cars, including an added turret cupola and side mounted machine gun shields. * The nomenclature "Admiralty Turreted Pattern" was normally omitted when referencing the vehicle. It was simply the "Lanchester Armored Car". ** A number of the Russian vehicles also had the turret machine gun replaced with a 37mm Cannon, thought to be a Hotchkiss Naval Gun. |
