Miscellaneous Info: | The PB-4 Amphibious Armored Car (Plavayushiy Broneavtomobil 4) followed the earlier unsuccessful BAD-2 vehicle design. The PB-4 used either the Ford-Timken or GAZ-AAA 6x4 Truck Chassis, fitted with an armored hull based upon the BA-3 Armored Car, and mounting a turret from the T-26 Light Tank. Over a few years, a very small number of evaluation vehicles were built. The later ones were fitted with improvements made after testing was done on preceding cars. Despite these changes, the Soviet military chose not to put the PB-4 into production because significant problems were still present. These problems included slow water speed/maneuverability and the vehicles' difficulty in transversing muddy river banks for which it was primarily designed. Although the PB-4 could be fitted with "overall" tracks on its rear wheels (like the BA-3), the improvement was nominal. Again, the Soviets moved forward with an another improved design:, the PB-7 Amphibious Armored Car. |
