The TAB-77 Transportor Amfibiu Blindat ("Amphibious Armored Personnel
Carrier", in English) was the successor to the earlier TAB-71 APC
Series. In effect, the TAB-77 was a Romanian license-built version of
the Soviet BTR-70 APC Series. Besides the
main, turreted APC, there were other variants,
including an Artillery Observation Vehicle (TAB-77 PCOMA), Command Post
(TAB-77A R-145-1/M), Signals Vehicle (TAB-77A R-1452) and Recovery &
Maintenance Vehicle (TERA-77L). In addition, although not an official
variant, the 4x4 ABC-79
Amphibious Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle was based upon, and used
similar components to this larger 8x8 vehicle series. As is always
the case, this APC series was replaced by a newer, more capable vehicle:
the B33 Zimbru APC. |
