Miscellaneous Info: | Although the much improved Austin 2nd Series Armored Cars were much more successful than the initially built Austin 1st Series vehicles, yet another improved vehicle followed suit: the Austin 3rd Series Armored Car. Another 60 cars were built for the Russians until the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution curtailed any further deliveries. The 3rd Series cars were very similar to the "late" 2nd Series vehicles, specifically the inclusion of a rear driver's position. However, in the case of the 3rd Series vehicles, the driver's position and mechanics were added at the Austin Factory in Great Britain and were not a subsequent addition by the Russians. As a result, the shape of the rear hull was different from that of the 2nd Series cars. Instead, the rear hull was built in a square shape, with a downward stepped design to allow the driver a better field of vision. Other prominent identifying features of the 3rd Series cars were a slimmer armored hull, metal rings on the top of the turrets and new, smaller rectangular protected vision ports. These replaced the large roll-down square windows in the 1st and 2nd Series vehicles. Again, this was not the end of the Austin story. One more vehicle type was yet to arrive: the Austin 3rd (Improved)/4th Series Armored Cars. |
