Miscellaneous Info: | The M1069 Prime Mover/Artillery Tractor variant in the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) series was designed specifically to tow the 105mm M119 Light Howitzer and to transport the gun crew. This variant was introduced later in the initial/first production series (A0) when the M998/M1038 Cargo/Troop Carriers were found lacking in their ability to adequately handle the prime mover role for the M119 gun. As a result, the M1069 was built with improvements, including the fitting of heavy-duty suspension springs and a reinforced tow pintle assembly. Although the M1069 was able to tow the new gun, the changes to the design caused rough/dangerous driving and handling characteristics. Thankfully at about the same time, AM General was working on what was to become the M1097 Heavy HMMWV Variant. Once completed, the M1097 was then quickly adopted as a replacement for the M1069. Therefore, the M1069 only served for a few years and was not further developed past the A0 series. |
