Miscellaneous Info: The XM1097 Heavy HMMWV Variant (HHV) was designed much later in the A0 series and was built to be used primarily as an artillery prime mover (quickly replacing the M1069 Prime Mover variant).  The M1097 (retroactively referred to as the "A0") vehicle was upgraded with a new suspension and drive train, as well as with a few other minor changes made.  The importance of this specific variant was that the upgrades to the M1097 were incorporated into the base improvements that would be added into the next vehicle production run for ALL variants.  That next production run would result in what would become the second HMMWV series, the "A1's".

The M1097A0 was then upgraded to the base HMMWV A1 specifications, which included a number of other changes and modifications not included in the changes previously mentioned. The M1097A1 then also replaced the M1037 Shelter Carrier and M1042 Shelter Carrier (with winch), which ceased to be produced at the A1 production standard.  Also, the later production version of the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger Air Defense Vehicle also used the A1 as it's base vehicle. The M1097A1 was also later used as the basis for the A2 production upgrades to the HMMWV series.  In fact, it was also decided the M998A1 Cargo/Troop Carrier would not be included in the A2 variant line-up and the M1097A2 became the base vehicle in the HMMWV series at that point. The M1097A2 was produced in three (3) versions: the base vehicle (simply named the Heavy Variant), the Cargo/Troop Carrier/Prime Mover and the Shelter Carrier. At the same time, a similar but unique variant was also created for the U.S. Marine Corps: the M1123 Heavy Cargo/Troop Carrier. Not yet finished as an important variant, the M1097A2 became the base vehicle for even more vehicles to be produced for service, the M1109 Heavy Uparmored Armament Carrier and the Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) series.
