Miscellaneous Info: The Volkswagen Type 183/Iltis ("Polecat" in German) was originally designed for use by the West German military to replace the Auto Union Munga Utility Vehicle.  The German variants were the base utility vehicle, ambulance, artillery aiming circle vehicle, battlefield surveillance radar vehicle, field cable-laying vehicle, MILAN anti-tank team vehicle and radio vehicle.

However, with the success of the design a few other countries, most notably Belgium and Canada, also decided to purchase the vehicle.  Belgian Iltis variants included the base vehicle, ambulance, command/liaison, MILAN anti-tank and reconnaissance.  Canadian variants were the base vehicle, base vehicle with 100 amp. alternator (for mounting radios), base vehicle with tailgate, ambulance, cable laying, command/reconnaissance and TOW ATGM launcher. The Canadian Iltis vehicles replaced their aging M38A1CDN Jeeps and M151A2 "Mutts".
