| Miscellaneous Info: | The BTR-80
Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) Series (aka: GAZ-5903) was an improvement
over
the BTR-70 APC Series.
BTR-80 improvements include thicker armor, more modern siting devices
(i.e. night-vision capability), better firing ports, a reduction to a
single, more modern diesel engine, new split side doors for easier
ingress/egress and an improved turret allowing higher weapon elevation. BTR is the acronym for "Bronetransporter", translated
from Russian as 'armored transporter'. As the BTR-80 design was relatively flexible for its time, improved versions of the APC were developed. One of these vehicles is the BTR-80M. Also, different variants (supplementing the APC) were also produced using the BTR-80 base vehicle as well. These include the 2S23 Nona-SVK Self-Propelled Mortar/Gun, BMM Armored Medical Vehicle, BREM-K Recovery Vehicle, BTR-80A/BTR-82/BTR-82A Infantry Fighting Vehicle, BTR-80K Command Vehicle, RKhM-4 & RkhM-6 Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Recon Vehicles and SPR-2 Jamming Vehicle. |
