Miscellaneous Info:

Around the same time as the A2 series were put into production in 1993, AM General independently developed a vehicle that was substantially more armored than past variants. The vehicle used the base M1097A2 chassis as the starting point and the armor was provided by O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt which was fitted after vehicle construction.  Up until that time, the armor fitted to the HMMWV's was limited or entirely supplemental to the vehicle design. This was spurred on by the famous "Blackhawk Down" incident in Somalia.  The new vehicle was called the XM-1109 Up-Armored Heavy HMMWV and was quickly evaluated by the U.S. Army and put into production as the M1109 Heavy Up-Armored Armament Carrier.  Examples were sent to Bosnia to serve with U.S. Forces, which were impressed with the vehicle.  About 160 vehicles were eventually built before the next up-armored HMMWV was produced: the Expanded Capacity HMMWV (ECH). d the Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) series.
