Development of the
M8 Greyhound Armored Car and
M20 Armored Utility
Car started in 1941 with the US Army’s Tank Destroyer Command
requesting a new wheeled Gun Motor Carriage (GMC) be developed. That
request was quickly expanded by the US Army into the creation of a
vehicle which could also perform other roles. Those roles included
cargo carrier, mortar carrier, multiple gun motor carriage and
reconnaissance vehicle. Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation were
asked to produce two (2) pilot models for evaluation; one being 4x4
drive and the other 6x6. Studebaker Corporation became involved later.
Ford's 6x6 offering was referred to as the T22 GMC and its 4x4 vehicle,
the T22E1 GMC. In March 1942, the vehicle designations above were
changed to T22 and T22E1 Armored Cars, respectively. The Ford T22 was evaluated first as it was submitted before the Chrysler (T23/T23E1) and Studebaker T21 Armored cars. The evaluation was so successful, that the US Army concluded that with some minor modifications and upgrades (e.g. the T22E2 prototype), the T22 series should be selected for production (ultimately becoming the M8 and M20). As a result, the T22E1, T23 and T23E1 programs were terminated, although the pilot models already started could be completed. Also, after a subsequent Army evaluation, the Studebaker T21 program was also terminated. The M8 also shares many of the same components, including the chassis/automotive components as the M20 Armored Utility Car. Also, an attempt was made to develop an anti-aircraft vehicle from the base M8, but was not put in production. That vehicle was named the T69 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage. Even long after World War Two, the Greyhound soldiered on in its original and improved/modified forms. A much later development of the Greyhound was Brazil's 4x4 M8 Brasileiro CRR, which was essentially a post-war modified M8. |

Guatemalan M8 Greyhound The Guatemalan M8 Greyhounds exchanged their gasoline engines to Detroit diesel 4-53N V4 rated at 140hp at 2,800 RPM, matched to Allison AT545 transmission. Their 37mm cannons continued to be used until the end, although there was a plan to replace the turret with an Oerlikon-Contraves model. |

Mexican M8 Greyhound Modificado Local industry upgraded the vehicle with a package developed by Napco International. Some 40 M8 were upgraded, replacing the original gasoline engine with a Detroit diesel 4-53N V4 rated at 140hp at 2,800 RPM, matched to Allison AT545 transmission. They also streamlined the vehicle hull and re-arranged the interior to improve combat readiness and crew comfort. The original 37mm M6 gun was replaced by an Oerlikon 20mm AKAN MK46 cannon with a 7.62mm machine gun mounted co-axially. The cannons were later replaced once more for South African F2 models. This 20mm gun fires high speed ammunition (1100 m/s) at a 740 rpm. |
