The Griffon Véhicule Blindé Multi-Rôles -VBMR (Multi-Role Armored Vehicle) is one of three (3) wheeled vehicles selected by the French Scorpion Program (Synergie du contact renforcée par la polyvalence et l'infovalorisation). Scorpion was created to replace or upgrade all of the French Army's (Armee de Terre) frontline combat vehicles around the same time. The Griffon was selected to replace the VAB APC Series.

The other vehicles selected by the Scorpion program are the Jaguar EBRC (Armored Combat & Recon Vehicle) and Serval VBMR-L (Light Multi-Role Armored Vehicle).  One goal of the program was to select vehicles that shared common parts and assemblies to ease support and maintenance.  For instance, the Griffon shares 70% of parts with the Jaguar EBRC.  In addition, the Belgian Army also selected the Jaguar to replace their Dingo 2 and Piranha IIIC vehicles by 2025.
